A Few Favourite Interior Styles & Using Mood Boards

A Few Favourite Interior Styles & Using Mood Boards

Spring can bring on a spring cleaning frenzy and the desire to reorganize, decorate and dream up new spaces. I enjoy (*ahem* am semi-obsessed) with home decor - books, magazines, blogs. It’s hard not to get sucked down this rabbit hole, you know what I mean?

In this post I’m going to

  • Share a few of my favourite interior decor styles
  • Share an actual mood board put together by a client featuring a couple of my paintings for her home office makeover (Psssst her favourite colour is pink!)
  • Some questions and resources to help you find your own decor style

Okay, so I don’t know about you, but spring just makes me long to reorganize and redecorate. Did you miss my post on spring cleaning and what to look for when adding a new item? Click here for the post.

Below are a few favourite styles including photos from books taken from these awesome resources: (if you're looking for some great interior decor books, I recommend these ones: Decorate - 1000 Professional Design Ideas for Every Room in Your House, by Holly Becker & Joanna Copestick, and Home Design Ideas - How to Plan and Decorate a Beautiful Home, by Caroline Clifton-Mogg, Joanna Simmons, and Rebecca Tanqueray).

Midcentury modern is a design style that’s currently very popular, and with good reason. The clean lines are timeless and sophisticated, easy to relax in. Geometric patterns in fabrics and art can add interest.

The natural style can include or exclude florals, but always embraces everything natural. Think natural materials like linens, cottons and wools, and bringing the outside in. It can include vintage pieces mix and matched with new heirloom items. I especially love the look of exposed wood beams and brick.

The simple style often makes use of a lot of white space, or another light colour that serves as negative space. I love this for the amount of ‘breathing’ room that it gives, a great way to relax after day full of stimuli. Nordic designs often serve as inspiration for simple styles.

This style is perfect for endless summer. Lots of warmth and the use of natural materials. While this style often has a comfortable lived in feel, this look can be elevated to look clean, uncluttered, and beautiful with simple tweaks, such as decor and assessors that are from the same or a complimentary colour to wall colours.

Mood Boards

Designers everywhere use mood boards to help with the design process. Mood boards are an amazing way to help you collect visual (and sometimes even tactile) information to narrow down what moves you, what gives you energy, inspires, relaxes you and more.

In fact, I've been doing a lot of mood boarding over the last few weeks as I think deeply about my approach to art and as I create my next collection (in the works, coming August 2018!).

If you prefer a neater way of mood boarding, you can collect all your images and lay them out scrapbook style.

As promised, here is the mood board a client and dear Instagram friend put together as plans for her office makeover. The room is currently occupied, but as a designer with a strong talent for thrifting quality furniture and breathing new life into them, it’s never too early to start planning. I love her mood board, don’t you? She even has an entire blog post talking about her plans for her new office space.
